Fregate Island
51 Years of Conservation in Action
February 2026 – Fregate Island stands as one of the most ambitious conservation projects in the Indian Ocean. For decades, the private island has implemented scientifically grounded programs to protect endemic flora and fauna, seamlessly integrating these efforts into a sustainable island operation. At the same time, the island’s resort is currently undergoing a complete redevelopment and is set to reopen in autumn 2026 in a renewed and refined form.

Conservation & Research
The Fregate Island Foundation is dedicated to protecting and studying the island’s exceptional biodiversity. Significant ecological milestones include the successful breeding program for Aldabra giant tortoises, the protection of hundreds of nests of the critically endangered hawksbill turtle (October to January), and the conservation of the Seychelles magpie robin.
In addition, a long-term coral restoration program—supported by Coralive—is underway. This includes comparative studies on mineral accretion technology as well as the use of intelligent monitoring buoys. Guests are invited to experience many of these conservation projects up close.

Realm of Giants: The Aldabra Giant Tortoises
With over 3,500 free-roaming Aldabra giant tortoises, Fregate is home to one of the largest populations in the world. A dedicated rearing center protects juvenile tortoises during their most vulnerable early years before they are released into the wild. Guests have the rare opportunity to encounter these gentle giants—some of which can live up to 150 years—in their natural habitat.
Protecting the Oceans: Turtle Nesting & Coral Reefs
Fregate’s untouched beaches serve as vital nesting grounds for endangered hawksbill and green turtles. The conservation team closely monitors the nesting season to ensure the highest possible hatching success rates.
At the same time, innovative coral restoration initiatives are helping to strengthen reef resilience in the face of climate change, safeguarding the island’s surrounding marine ecosystem for future generations.
Sustainability & Farm-to-Table
Conservation on Fregate extends far beyond wildlife. More than 80% of the ingredients used at the resort are sourced from the island’s own organic farming or from sustainable local fishing.
By avoiding pesticides and utilizing advanced solar technology, Fregate minimizes its ecological footprint—demonstrating that exceptional culinary experiences and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
